Do you Seder?

After many of you commented, "Uh...Lemonade Makin' Mama?... What's a Seder Dinner?" (I'm paraphrasing) I realized that, being the supreme non-Jewish, non-expert, on all things "Seder," I needed to take it upon myself to non-enlighten you. (Ahem.) Which basically means, that after this post, you may know less about Seder than when you began. (I never claimed to be an expert.  At least on this...) 
My BFF is Jewish and she doesn't seem particularly offended that I participate, host, or basically have no clue when it comes to Passover.  I do try to be respectful of the traditions set before me.  (If you want to know more about a traditional Seder Meal, click here.)  We celebrate it in our family, because the ceremony itself is full of rich symbolism that we relate to, from our Christian viewpoint, during Easter.

Dangit... Adrain stole my camera.  He took multiple photos that will not be seen in this post, up to, and including photos of my hiney. Men.

So... um... when you're shopping for Seder, and you have no idea how much Matzah bread to purchase... and you see a huge case of five boxes... yeah... don't buy it. I'm pretty sure one box would be sufficient for a party of eight. I now have enough unleavened bread to supply a small church for a year.
This was my first experience with cooking a lamb shank.  I don't even know if it was supposed to be cooked for the Seder plate.  I'm like the blind non-jew, leading the curious. In other words, don't listen to me because I'm clearly no expert.
I will say... that you know it's a good party when the table top gets trashed by the end of the night.

Of course that could have just been the four glasses of Seder wine talking...

  5. WEll how cool is that. My mom actually prepared a passover supper for about 25 people, but I didn't know it was called Seder. I didn't get to go because it was the day we left, but she had the same things...apples, walnuts and honey, horseradish, parsley, unleavened bread, eggs and lamb. I would have loved to have been there.

  6. It's quite a traditional dinner. We watched a film about the food, the meanings, the order, etc. WOW I am surprised anyone can get all that straight! Good Job!
    (oh and if President Obama can partake, anyone can partake..*sigh*)

  11. Seder looks awesome!~ We had some Jewish friends in Florida, but I honestly do not remember them talking about Seder....You table looked awesome!~ And you look cute in your apron too!~

  12. I love the idea of celebrating Passover as Christians. Or at least talk about it as it relates to Easter. Beautiful!

  16. It's Passover! And how wonderful it all looks. It certainly wasn't eatne in haste with bitter herbs but the idea is lovely. Your table looks smashing. Your a cutie and it would be a terrible shame if your hubby DID'NT take pitchas of your hiney!!

  22. Sometimes the blind are better than officionados as they tend to take a fresh approach to a time-old tradition and breath new life in it! Seems you did that, my dear. Your bff is very lucky!

  28. So, as Edie pointed out, I also did a Seder. This was my first year and the first time anyone I know has ever prepared a leg of lamb. My marinade-making experience leaves little to be desired, except that it finally turned out okay. Let's just say it shouldn't have taken an hour to make a marinade.

    My suggestion for your leftover matzoh is to look up "Matzoh toppings" to find out the many creative ways that observing Jews use unleavened bread during this time of year. A few ideas that I hadn't thought of: cherry preserves, cream cheese, real butter, pizza toppings. After I started thinking of it as bread and not just a big cracker, those leftover babies disappeared in less than 24 hours. And I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

    My house is tiny (about 1000 square feet) and yet we had 19 people for a sit down dinner. Instead of doing the traditional Seder, with the special order of eating and drinking, I made little cards that explained each food's significance and left my computer open to the link that explained Elijah's cup in detail. This was definitely best for a Passover dinner that included seven children under the age of 12.

    I was so excited to find out that we both did this! Hope you're having a great week...aren't you glad we didn't have to remove every speck of leaven from our houses before the dinner? ;)
