Etsy-izing myself...(sneak peek)

I am completely terrified.  I am about to join the ranks of "real bloggers" by opening an Etsy store.  (Don't most bloggers have one? Ha!)  I've spent the past week beginning my Etsy store collection, (hoping to open it sometime in February) and I'm panicking with thoughts of, "What if no one likes my creations?!"  "What if nobody buys anything?"  "What if I fail?"  But I keep forging ahead because doing scary things makes you feel alive.  These are my gray (grey?) signs. (I'm currently at work on some white ones.) I love them.  I wish I could keep them. I am a lover of words and numbers, so it felt natural to incorporate them into my art.  If you see any imperfections, it's probably because at the time I was painting, I was also attempting to spell words for my second grader, or look up information on Allied forces in WWII for my forth grader.  Hoodlums. This sign is fun, and I'm planning to make it in black and white with a square shape as well. (It can be hung vertically or horizontally too!)
Now this one... well, I love it to death because it's a beachy, relaxed sign that makes me feel like sitting on white sands with a glass of icy lemonade in hand.  All of my signs are going to be created on reclaimed lumber from my local re-store because you can score some amazing finds there, and each sign will be completely unique because you might get one created from an old cupboard door, or a slat of bead board. You just never know with me. (Which can really be said for me in all of life.)
And of course, everything will be slightly distressed because, why-the-heck-not?!
This sign probably means the most to me, because I love the quote.  And the truth of it.
Of course, I'm not only going to be making wooden, hand-painted signs.  No sirreee!  I've got some big plans...

I'm going to be silk screening numbered pillows like the ones that sit on my sofa, and so many of you drool over... and several sets of my "eat" napkins that we all love from this post.  Not to mention camera straps, like the one I made here.  I have a bunch of cute fabrics and designs for those.  So much left to create, and so many more ideas after these are completed!  Eek!

I'm guessing that the fear will really creep in, once the creating is done and I have to actually put myself out there.  How do you guys who have Esty stores do it?  Aren't you scared to death?  Does it get easier?

  1. Beautiful! Would you ever consider taking special orders--making signs in which the buyer has a favorite saying/quote they would love to see on a specially made by Sasha sign? Just wonderin' because I have this quote I LOVE--"To be happy at home; the ultimate result of all ambition." I've dreamed of stenciling it, but the dream fades quickly...a Sasha sign? I can see it now!! Good luck!!

  4. Girl! I just know you will be successful. I love what I see so far. Whisper: guess what? I am planning to open my own shop as well. And I have the exact same fears. We'll never know if we don't try, right?

  20. you're gonna do great! and i agree - doing things that scare you is a good practice in living life. i always think about what paul tells timothy in II timothy 1:7, that God didn't give us a spirit of fear or timidity. to me, that means any spirit of fear is something the devil's using to keep me down & ineffective. so, you go girl!

  23. Sasha - oh my goodness YOU will do great! Try not to be too scared - and don't give up - you are DOING it and that's all that matters!! Seriously, I am surprised you didn't do this sooner - ALL of your crafty things are great and I have been envious because I am SO not crafty! You definately need to do your wooden flag - that turned out awesome - believe me there are plenty of us out here who love Pottery Barn but cannot afford many of the things we would love to have and the things you have shared with us that you have created yourself - FABULOUS!!!

So very excited for you! I will be looking for a special piece to buy for myself!!

  24. Oh my gosh, I've been loving those napkins you posted pics of a while back. SO cute! I can't wait to see your store when it finally opens and look at your beautiful creations! Another thing that I think you would do great at is little party plannign kits. When you feature them on your blog you could create a basket or something with the flutes, apple cider, napkins, etc... and recipes for example to pull off the festive fall feast like this one: http://www.lemonademakinmama.com/2010/10/entertaining.html .

    Kind Regards,
    Nicole

  25. YES! This is the most perfect thing I've read all day! I feel like God just said "DUH!" really loudly in my head as I was reading this - you are the most perfect candidate for an Etsy shop that I can think of. I'll surely be stopping by when you're ready to go!

  27. I've been thinking about opening at etsy store for three years - my advice - JUST DO IT! :-)

  28. You will do great for sure. I opened up an etsy shop a few months ago, and it still freaks me out. I have had a few sales, but still not good enough for me. "So, you like this? But... why not that?? Is it too pricey? Is it not cute enough? Would you take it if I gave it away for free?" You know?

  29. I totally get how you're feeling but the signs which you feature in your blog are AMAZING!! Be confident and be brave. I've been making things for years and just before Christmas took some of my stuff into the school where I work and I had lots of orders and it really boosted my confidence. This is the year for being brave! All the best :)

  44. You will totally rock the etsy store! I think your only problem will be keeping up with demand.

    Here is my confession.

I have shelves full of vintage things I purchased from estate sales with the purpose of selling them on etsy.

    These things were purchased in.....2008.

  45. Here are the facts:

If I had even an ounce of the talent you possess, I would have opened a successful Esty shop years ago. Truth.

ps. Can I preorder. Like seriously.

  49. I'm wanting signs that spell our last name and two of my boys' names in Ship Signal Flags? Might possibly that work its way onto your signs?

How do you find a re-store?

When your store opens, I will definitely be by. I always love your signs!
