Greetings from Loserville

I would like to loudly proclaim that you guys are the best group of readers on the face of the earth!  (echoing, "earth...earth...earth..") Was that loud enough?  It may surprise you to know that in real life, I am very quiet woman.  Okay, so that was the biggest lie I've ever told.  The truth is, I am so extremely loud that I embarrass friends and family with startling regularity because I cheer wildly, I clap, I laugh loudly, I holler, I jump, and my indoor voice is kind of non-existent.  (Incidentally, I married a very quiet man.  He's been riding a loud roller coaster beside me, for nearly 18 years. Poor man.) Anyway, I love you guys.  I got so much great advice that it helped me work through what exactly was feeling overwhelming to me, as I read through your amazing words.  No kidding, every single comment was helpful.  I realized that I'm terrified of this Etsy store taking over my life, so I came to the conclusion that I'd complete and list this current collection (which is coming along nicely, complete with the CUTEST camera straps you have ever seen!) and then work on another one during the Summer time, when life is slower paced. (In time for a Fall listing!)  I feel more relaxed already.  Especially after putting some of your great advice to work. You guys blow me away with your collective wisdom and encouragement!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
And while I was getting all that sorted in my mind, my family waged war against me in a thumping game of Phase ten, in which I hung across the table wailing.  (Not real wailing... more like faux wailing... I like to add a little drama to the game in order to keep it from getting too boring.) No one takes me very seriously either.  In fact, I believe there was some laughter at my expense during this game.
Games can get kind of crazy around our house.  People are throwing cards all over the place, and no one can remain seated for a full hand.  I have no idea why that is.  (It's not like they get that from me... ahem.)
I really do love these peeps through... even if they skip me.
This great hand didn't save me, and my entire family beat me.

I think they enjoyed it way too much.  Apparently, my wailing did more harm than good. (giggle)

Do you guys have family game nights?   We play Phase ten a lot, but I'd love to try a new game if you can recommend any!

(Preferably one I can win. Thanks.)

  1. Tonight we introduced our oldest son (9) to Scrabble. Sometimes my inlaws come over and we wait for my Mother-in-law to completely thrash us with her awesome Scrabble skills. But not tonight! I used ALL of my tiles and got the 50 bonus points! Woo-woo!! I got to show my son who's boss! :)

  4. I'm not sure how old your youngest is, but some games we really enjoy include Apples-to-Apples (loads of fun with the loud funny types!), Qwirkle (kind of a cross between scrabble and dominos, but uses shapes and colours instead; good for ages 6+) and Ticket to Ride (build train routes between cities; good for ages 8+)

  5. again, you always crack me up! we just got done with our monthly "coffeehouse" that we hold in our basement for our church youth group. we play lots of games [phase 10 being one of them], & tonight we had our annual SPOONS championship! it gets rather raucous, but it's always fun!

  6. oh oh oh!! Quelf is one of the most fun games, any age.. we love it! I echo Ticket to Ride.
If you want a DVD game for the whole family, get Disney Scene It, or Pirates of the Caribbean game. Life Pirates of the Caribbean is fun, too! We are a game family! And a little bit partial to pirates.. ARGH!

  10. We've always been partial to card games - love Phase 10, but I think Skip Bo is our favorite. A dominos-type game that we LOVE is Spinners. Sooo fun!

  17. We love Phase 10, Guesstures, and just about any other game. As a family, we play games all the time. We also Bunco once a month. It's fun to sit around the table and laugh and talk....without the tv on!

  18. Sasha,
had to laugh when I read your post today. We have family game nights here. We have a card game we like to play a lot called Quiddler. Mind you I am a quiet person...really, but when we play Quiddler, all is fair in love and war. LOL, every man for himself. We are all quite competitive. I think it stems from my hubby. Lol, really it's survival. HAHA. We also like to play Boggle and Balderdash.
So glad to hear that your gleaned some wisdom from your readers and you are feeling less overwhelmed now.
    Have a blessed week!

  19. I think I've played that...super fun! I love doing anything with my peeps. Is there anything better than being with people who love you no matter what?

I knew you'd figure (Etsy) it out. You're smart like that.

  20. We love UNO and Apples to Apples Junior! We also adore Dutch Blitz and PIT - now that one can get really loud and out of hand though! The kids adore the Adventures in Odyssey 'Answer That!' but you have to be a big fan to do well. For a good fine motor skill game we enjoy Crokinole but those game boards are hard to find Stateside. Enjoy your family game nights - they are a blessing and work wonderfully in building strong relationships with one another.

  21. My mom, grandma and I LOVE Phase 10 and play it just about every time we have dinner together. My aunts and cousins play with us when they're in town, too. Some of our other favorites are SkipBo and Uno, which are both card games.

  22. I purchased Phase 10 and yet I don't even think I've sat through one whole game, for one reason or another. When we get together with friends we play Apples to Apples.

But my best game memories are the times my mom's side of the family would all get together on New Years Eve & July 4th and play Uno. It was brutal, it was vicious, there was cheating and yelling and groaning and smacking. Or Trivial Pursuit, which was played a lot when I was younger (like mid-'80s). Those are definitely the sorts of stories I'll want to tell my kids one day.

  23. We love: sequence, speed (with regular cards), farkle (comes with a nifty cup ... triple love it!), phase 10 DICE (new twist on the great game)! So glad you play games -- even if you don't win! Just by playing ... YOU'RE A WINNER!!
