Makin Lemonade from mistakes. (And winner!!)

Sometime around Christmas, I was feeling the need for a bedroom refresh, but of course, at Christmas, there's not usually a lot of cash to spare.  When I happened upon a white cotton duvet and two shams for $20.00 at Target, I snapped them up, knowing I'd be able to put them to use as soon as the "winter blah's" settled upon my shoulders.  (Sometime around January 2nd.) I actually just placed them under my bed and forgot about them until last week sometime. When I went to fit them, freshly washed, onto my comforter, I came across one small problem.  I had purchased a king size duvet and sham set... and my comforter is a queen.  Oops.  I'm sad that I didn't get a before photo, but it was just plain white cotton.  Nothing fancy.
I walked past my extra large, droopy bedding for about a day when inspiration struck.  I happen to love the whole messy bed look, and I love the look of gathered fabric.  It hit me!  I divided up my duvet into equal portions, and finger pleated the fabric by pinching it, and then clothes-pinned it in place.  (Yes, I spray paint my clothespins.  It makes laundry so much more fun.)
The next thing I did was sew those pinched sections of fabric together.  That was it.  After I went all over my duvet doing this, I'd eliminated a ton of extra fabric, and ended up with a darling finished product.  I did the same thing to my extra large pillows too!
Um... yeah... I meant to buy an extra large duvet...
That's what I call turning my mistake into lemonade.  Have you ever done something like that, but then been truly happy with the end result?

Oh and the winner of the Eco Natural soap giveaway was number 11, picked as a random number drawing,  by my my eldest hoodlum.  Congrats Ashley!  Contact me at lemonademakinmama@comcast.net with your email and I'll hook you up to claim your prize!

  3. Love the bedding! Oh how I wish I could have white bedding, but with two dogs who jump from the back door directly onto my bed it just doesn't work :( I will just admire yours :)

  4. That turned out really great! To me, it gives it the look of a puffy fluffy down bed, just waiting to be jumped on. SO COMFY!!! I'm glad it worked out. It would have been a shame to find such a phenomenal bargain and have it go to waist! Keep inspiring!

  7. Jessie May;

    The color was a combination of about five different cans of paint in my garage. LOL I know one was called French Gray from Sherwin Williams, and there were a few other blue colors and some white in there...

    Wow. That was really helpful wasn't it? (She says sarcastically)

  13. I'm inspired! Thinking on how to change my own bedroom up. I also have a white duvet set that I too purchased for just 20 bucks. I'm not using it right now tho. Maybe it's time to pull it out?!

  14. I wish I had the nerve to play with things like that! I don't trust myself! I love what you did with it, too!
    A while ago, you posted pictures of the new dining (or was it the kitchen?) table that you distressed, and I love it so much, but I know my husband would have been too nervous about me altering our new table. Little booger. ;)
