The Beckster.

You know what's fun? Flying across the country to see one of your besties. I just returned home from a whirlwind long weekend with Becky of Farmgirl Paints.  I know that many of you follow her sweet blog.  That's how she and I met, about three or four years ago.  I had no idea that I'd find one of my closest friends through a long distance computer relationship, back when I first started blogging in 2008, but that's what I found in Becky.  And oh man do we have fun when we get together.
You know what makes you laugh hysterically?  Trying to photograph yourself laying on wet grass in the middle of a tourist attraction, with dozens of onlookers who likely think you've gone and lost your ever loving mind.

You know what's comforting?  Being with a person you can laugh with, talk with, cry with, be honest with, and photograph everything that doesn't move with.  I just love that girl to pieces.  She is probably the only other person I know, that would think spending the morning at a cemetery, taking millions of photos and reading old headstone epitaphs is fun.  (People are just dying to go there, you know.   I'm sorry...  it couldn't be helped.)

You know what's inspiring?  Getting to see her sweet house, with all of it's bright pockets of sunny artwork splashing the walls with fun.  She showed me how she creates her cuffs, (which is privileged, top secret information) and if you want one like mine, you can ask her.  Her work is as lovely as she is.  Oh and I got to meet her precious family too, which was a high point for me.  Getting to see someones life for years via photos, and then finally getting to see it in person is amazing.

You know what's adventurous?  Two directionally challenged women, (ahem) trying to navigate and drive to locations neither one has ever been.  Becky and I toured her town, went to see Footloose, scoured Williamsburg for the perfect photo op, had an amazing lunch overlooking the James river, visited the wrong cemetery until we found the famous Hollywood Cemetery, hiked over the grounds of nearby Maymont, and savored things like coffee (well I didn't cause I don't do coffee) expensive chocolate, frozen yogurt, and creme brulee.  We got lost and then unlost, stumbled upon a Farmer's Market that turned out to be lame, jumped in and out of the car photographing things like sheep in pastures, and admired gorgeous trees, majestic homes, monuments, historic sites, and falling leaves.
You know what's heart-wrenching?  Seeing time-worn words, etched into stone that tell the kind of grief that can't be lessened, only remembered.

You know what's thought provoking?  Being in a place that some of your country's founding fathers have stood. I love Virginia.  I mean LOVE.  It's such a sweet place!!  Rich in history, full of nice people, sweet little accents, gentle manners and gorgeous homes.  I can't wait to come back Virginia!

Now... as for the flying...
You know who gets the gold star of Sasha-approval?  Flight attendants.  I swear they never lose their cool, never speak harshly, and always look pretty.  They are the rock stars of the skies.

You know what messes with your internal clock just a little bit?  Jet lag, coupled with Daylight Savings.  Just sayin.'  (Am I coming, or going?  Cause I'm not sure.  And is it bedtime or dinner time? Ha!)

You know what makes you glad you not only took Dramamine but have a "just in case" barf bag neatly stuffed into the seat pocket in front of you, on the airplane?  The grown man adjacent to your seat picking his eyes and nose and eating the little crusties on the airplane.  True story. Try not to gag.

You know what makes you happy to come home again?  A tall, dark, and handsome man attempting to corral little hoodlums with uncombed hair and mismatched clothing in an airport baggage claim.

  1. Oh incredible photos!! That tombstone just brokee my heart a little. I bet they never thought that several hundred years later complete strangers would be shedding tears for that sweet mom and her baby.

There are just too many fantastic things to comment on in this post.

I'd like to officially invite myself to your next get together. :)

  4. A big part of my heart is in VA (as well as most of my family)- and to me it's absolutely stunning in autumn - i'm so glad you went!

Oh, and us flight attendants (past life) do lose our cool occasionally but for the most part - it is an awesome job!

  6. So glad you had a great trip! I completely agree about flight attendants! I'm terrified of flying and flew across country in October. They were unbelievable sweet to me and checked on me so often (thank goodness no disgusting guy sat next to me). I even had an answered prayer as a very kind woman changed her seat to be beside me (and even saw me to lunch and my next gate, and waited till I boarded). It's so worth it though, living with fear is no fun, but living with fear and regret is even worse! You really seemed refreshed from this trip! I haven't really commented before but you've been in my prayers.

  17. Sasha, your post made my heart skip a beat this morning! I'm from VA - it's home to me, even though I've been gone for a number of years. I follow both your blog and Becky's. I'm also getting ready to sell my house and move across the country, so I enjoy reading about your home selling adventure during the holidays, too! What a crazy time to sell a house! Best of luck to you.

Becky is a special gal and I know having you come and visit and letting her show you around all of her newness, was as special as ever for the both of you.
