Worth the wait...

I have a confession.  Come closer and I'll whisper it to you.  I did something that I said I wouldn't do.  I know.  It's shocking.  (Cause I never change my mind about anything.  Ever.  Ha!)
Remember a couple years ago, when I said I was going to try not to change my throw pillows out any more?  At the time, I was digging myself out of a seasonally changing decor thing, fueled by (I'm ashamed to admit) a discontented spirit at times.  I've been working very hard at simply being content and thankful for my many blessings.  (Not that things don't still change of course... but you know what I mean- it was the heart behind it.) You know that old adage, "Love what you have."
What I didn't count on, was that my small family members (who shall remain nameless) use those pillows for everything under the sun- on and off the couch.  Which is as it should be of course too because a house is to be lived in, not merely looked at. Sadly however, that diminishes the longevity of items like oh... I don't know... pretty couch pillows.  The stuffing was pulling apart in clumps on all the corners, and no matter how often I washed and tried to fluff them, it was time for a refresh.  (Plus they had a weird smell.  Don't tell anyone this, but I was getting a little self conscious of people sitting on the couch and sniffing our pillows.  I know... that's weird. Or maybe it's the couch that smells.  I don't know...)
Way back in December, I began plotting... One month at a time, I began purchasing new pillow inserts- really good ones with down feathers, and then new pillow covers that I'd been eyeing for the past year.  (Pottery Barn) I finally had all the pieces, and got to put them onto my sofa for a fresh look.  What I had forgotten, was what a big change a small thing like new pillows can make.  (Especially on a sofa you'd do just about anything to get rid of in place of a washable slip covered one because you have a JJ in your household.  Just saying.)
I tried to choose neutral-ish colors, because I'm going to have these babies as long as I can, with the same intentions as my previous pillows.  (Who have now gone on to pillow heaven.)  It feels like I've been waiting months for these babies, but it was so worth the wait.  because I really love them!
Speaking of waiting, I've been waiting and trying to find the perfect thing for my coffee table ever since Christmas decorations got packed up, and mostly it's been a boring blank space.  We have coffee table problems around here.  Tell me if you can relate.  1) I don't like a lot of junk all over the place.  2) We put our feet on that table all. the. time, so if there's junk on it, it's going to get moved around or thrown on the floor.  Especially by kids. It's real life, you know? 3) I don't necessarily like decor just for the sake of decor- it depends on where it's at, so I wanted something useful and pretty.  That's it own problem right there, just so you know.
Once I had my pretty pillows on the couch, it got the ball rolling and I remembered these really inexpensive (like under $15) wire baskets at my grocery store. (Fred Meyer)  I've purchased a couple of extra large sized ones for towels in our bathrooms over the past few months and I really love the way they look.  I had planned on getting one of the little ones today when I grocery shopped so I could use it on the counter for produce.  I was thrilled when I saw that the entire stock of them were on extreme clearance, so I got two of them!  Each basket was about $7.  I almost yelled for joy.
Now I've got one for produce, and one for our family's current reads. I used old candles (from Pier 1) and old candle holders (Target) beside it.  Not too fussy, and easy to shift or move if I need to.

Now I'm off to Ikea this weekend with my book club girls, where I'm getting a few fun things for my daughter's mini room refresh.  I can't wait to show you what I've got going on!  Her repaint is happening on Monday... so if you don't hear from me for a few days, you can know that I'm working my hiney off getting it all cute for my favorite little girl.  By the way, Nurse Nicki has never been to Ikea.  Gasp!  I plan to fully initiate her into Swedish Pictorial Instructions and navigating a maze.

What are you doing all weekend?

  1. Ooo, I love the new pillows. And those baskets! I wish we had a Fred Meyer. You got them for a steal. It really does pay to wait :) Have fun at IKEA. I am hoping to go before too long.

  2. I love the look! It looks fresh. You're so funny with the couch and pillow thing, shhh, I'm the same way. I could almost swear that my couch or pillows smell funny. I'm currently washing them as I type this comment. I wish that I had the patience and the talent to recover my sofa, just to rid myself of the old fabric. Now the coffee table, same here. My son loves to draw on it, it already has pen marks and even dents. But I love my table, a bit wobbly, but still good enough to rest our heels on it. You're post made me smile today. Thank you girlie. Wish that I could go to Ikea too.

  4. LOVE Ikea. My BFF and I have been known to walk through an IKEA and chat on the phone with each other, offering a virtual visit, so to speak. People think we're nuts, I'm sure. Have fun initiating Nurse Nikki!
And, may I add, I wish my grocery had fun stuff like wire baskets. Mine has the weird stuff, like the no-name candy in the really ugly-and-didn't-even-make-it-to-the-dollar-bin containers.
Love the post. Have a great weekend!

  11. I just love those wire baskets, I have an obsession with baskets! But I hear you on the couch pillows. They get tossed around so much by the kids and the dog that you just have to get new one every so often! They are beautiful, great style!

  12. Oh, pretty pillows are an obsession of mine; unfortunately my crazy boys love them too and they take a terrific beating!
I really appreciated what you said about trying to be content; I love so many things that I would like to just change up my style whenever I had the whim; which would be very often, I assure you. I reign myself in, though, so my husband doesn't think I'm completely nutty.
I have some great wire baskets; one I uncovered in our basement from the previous owners; he ran a grocery store back in the 60's, and I found a wire grocery basket hiding in a corner; I assure you it is front and center on our ottoman! I love the dickens out of it! I have a handful of other's from my grandpa's farm that were used to, well...tote pheasant carcasses around in. Ha! Grody job, but they are pretty baskets!

  14. Lovin' the pillows, but especially the baskets. Wire baskets just steal my heart. Did I see Divergent in one of those pretty baskets? Isn't it great!?!?

My weekend consists of filling every second with something to keep my mind off of my man being out of town on business.

Hope you're weekend's just as sweet as you!

  15. Oh love those baskets! And Divergent! Have you read it, did you love it!? It is one of my most recent favorites :)

I am helping my parents paint every single wall in their new home this weekend... it's going to be a long one, but a colorful one :)

  19. How refreshing to read about your coffee table issues, I was beginning to think I was the only one with these. When you see so many blog photos of perfectly styled tables with glass cloches, stacks of old books tied with twine and the tarnished tray holding a mercury glass collection, you begin to wonder if you are the only family who actually USES their coffee table, and don't even get me started on the railroad cart tables - had one - lovely to look at, but totally impractical for a family with kids and pets. Anyway, love this post, and the room is wonderful - love the gallery wall!!

  22. I've never been to IKEA either? Gasp! I know! The closest one is about 4 hours away, which might explain why. Oh the sadness. With our recent home renos I've been eying their website a whole lot lately - but flinching at the shipping fees. So I was delighted to hear that some good friends of ours are making the trek this weekend and TAKING A VAN, and said they'd pick up anything we wanted! Thank you God! Christmas has come again! Just a little excited. Hope you have a fun trip! I'll be there vicariously :-)

  26. Love the new pillows! I, too, have been working on being happy with what I have and trying NOT to want more. Sometimes I think just the little things meet that need for us. Your baskets are so neat too! I see that you have "The Hiding Place" ~ absolutely adore that book. I've read it more than once and it is so heartwrenching.

Thanks for sharing your home with us and the knowledge that it's really lived in! :-)

  29. Love your fresh new look! I just noticed the ladder in your kitchen...IS it vintage? A friend with a little antique shop made me a new one painted white. I have aprons and tea towels on it, but I love the older ones. I hope you are having fun on your Ikea trip, can't wait to see your treasures.

  33. I absolutely love thirty-one products and I looked at Kelly's site and knew immediately what I would love to have! The rolling thermal bag. We love to go on picnics and that would be great! Plus we spend a lot of holidays at my sisters who lives an hour away because her husband is a police commander and is almost always on call for all the major holidays. Well I always bring food and try to keep it either hot or cold but don't have anything big enough to hold it all...I know this is not what your giveaway is for...but I ramble because I am also so excited to have found your blog! I tried to start my own but I have found that if I spend my time doing that I miss out on looking at everyone else's for all their great ideas! So I would love to win the bag you are giving away...it would make a great travel companion for my road trips with the three kiddos and the puppy! Awesome blog. Cant wait to see more of it.
