Goodbyes...

As most of you know our family was supposed to have been on vacation all this week, soaking up the Ocean waves.  We had two glorious days of fun, and were truly having one of the best vacations we'd ever had!  Late last night, my parents called us in our hotel room, and let us know that our precious doggy, Lucy, had somehow escaped their fenced backyard, and was missing.
It was about 8:00 pm, and we felt frantic to come back and find her.  The kids were a wreck and Adrain and I knew no one would sleep until Lucy was found, so we began praying like crazy, throwing stuff into the car, and racing back the six hour drive home.  Somehow, my brother, called a few of his police officer friends in my city, and they miraculously found her.  She had been hit in the head by a car going very fast, and was in shock.  Her little eyes had burst from their sockets and her face bones were broken.  The animal control guy took her to an emergency vet hospital where they made her as comfortable as possible, and we stayed in contact as we got closer and closer.  We were told that if she survived, she would lose both eyes, and there would be extensive brain damage of the unpredictable sort, etc.  The vet didn't want the kids or I to see her like that, so we all hugged Adrain so he'd smell like us, and then he went in about 3 am, and held her little paw while they put her to sleep.  We had all sobbed most of the night as you can imagine and didn't sleep at all.

We are so thankful that we felt the urgency to head home immediately so we could say good bye.  And we are so thanking God that when our GPS steered us down an unknown route and we were literally running on fumes, we stumbled into a Gas station with about two miles left.  We are praising Him for the 2 1/2 years we had with our Lucy girl and for the fact that my brother was able to help us find her.  My sweet parents are of course beside themselves, but I'm so thankful for them and that they made her last few days away from us, good ones.

Our family would love your prayers.... we have never had a family dog before Lucy, and she has left an awful hole in our hearts.  We already miss her more than I ever thought possible.  I'll miss her 3:00 pm cue every day as she somehow always knew it was nearly time for my kids to get home and would sit staring at the front door, waiting.  I'll miss her fierce barking at solicitors.  I'll miss her nightly playtime with Adrain and their game of hide and seek.  I'll miss her stupid bone that always found it's way into the most crazy spots.  Most of all, I'll just miss her, and so will my husband and kids.

  7. Sasha, I'm so sorry. As I was reading, I was sure it was a mistake, or a really mean late April Fool's joke. How devastating, and how beautiful that you count your blessings in the midst of it. God has control and will lead your family through this grief. We will pray for you and your sweet family.

There are days when something will trigger a memory and we will talk and laugh together as we share our memories of him. Praying for your family as you grieve and adjust.

  24. Oh my gosh, I am so incredibly sorry. We are 2.5 years into our first ever dog and I can only imagine how hard this must be for you, your husband, your children and your parents. You will all most certainly be in our prayers this evening. My priest and I have had an ongoing light hearted debate about whether or not pets go to Heaven. He always says the deciding factor is if they have a soul. Having spent these last 2.5 years with our Bailey Rose, I know I will meet her in Heaven some day as I know you will all be able to play again with Lucy. One look at her sweet face and eyes and there is not doubt there is soul behind them. Many blessings, Laura

My heart is breaking for you all - pets have such a hold on our hearts, and leave a big hole when they leave. Sending prayers your way!
When the time feels right - sometimes it comes much sooner than expected - it is quite alright to bring some new doggie love into the family. Lucy would be happy that you are giving another lucky doggie a good home. There are so many that need good homes. xox
P.S. If you haven't heard of the Rainbow Bridge, Google it - it might bring you comfort. :)

  36. Oh Sasha, My heart is broken for you and your family. Tears roll as I read your post and as I type this. Thank you soooo much for sharing the photos of your family and Lucy. Made me sob even harder but they are so precious. I truly understand your loss. I have had 15 favorite furry - doggie - family members in my lifetime. Our current four legged furry family members are just as important to us as our spouses and our children. They are our children, only furry ! They are there for us unconditional and teach us many things.... But I agree with Lanny that Lucy is in heaven and will wait patiently until the day you get to join her and play ball and hide that bone again. (I totally understand your sadness as yesterday morning we had to have emergency surgery for our four legged furry Savannah to remove two toes and part of her back right paw for cancer. We are to pick her up in an hour and start the rehab and retraining to walk. Will give her hugs to pass on up to Lucy ♥!) Hugs, tears and prayers are sent your way ♥♥♥♥

Thank you for the years they were able to have with her, the joy she brought in to their lives, the safety she provided, the wagging tail when they got home, the gentleness she gave the kids and countless other things. Thank you for bringing the family safely back from vacation so that they could be there to comfort her as she left this earth. Please bring this family only the comfort that YOU can provide. Amen!

  55. It is always so hard to say good-bye...this poem always helps me....hope it helps you and your family.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  76. Sash, you will never get over a great dog's loss. It's really tough, dear one, to have a family member who you love, and trust, and share so much with be taken from you like this. When you are ready, a new puppy can fill a big part of the holes in your hearts, but it will never completely fill those holes, and rightly so. Not a day goes by, it seems that we don't think of our dog Charlie and what a wonderful boy he was. We still have his ashes and we will be planting a dogwood tree over them so that he will still live on for years to come. We plan to do that will all of our beloved dogs as their times come. I will be thinking of you and Adrain and the kids over this. Love you.

  97. Saying goodbye stinks! We experienced our own goodbyes back in December. I know it may seem premature, but the best decision we ever made was to get another dog. In fact, we adopted our Josie only 3 days after saying goodbye to sweet Mabel. While I was sure it was too soon for another dog, I now can't imagine not having her. She help SO MUCH with my grief. Again, I know it may seem too soon to even fathom another animal, but I promise you won't regret it. I will be praying for your sweet family.

  108. I am so sad for you and your family, Sasha! I'm crying as I type. There really is no love or loyalty like what you receive from a dog! I've always called them metaphors for God because they can't actually talk back to us and they love us unconditionally no matter what we look like, no matter the day we had and no matter how we treat them. They are loving and loyal until the end! I pray for healing in your family. It's a tough time to read this because my in-laws are putting down their 15 year old black lab tomorrow, in fact. She no longer can walk and it's so hard to see them hurting so much! I'm really very sorry for the loss of your beloved, beautiful dog. She was unbelievably blessed to have been a part of your family. May she rest in peace! Hugs, Laura at www.theironstonenest.com, or libralola@yahoo.com.

  120. I had read this and loved it, just wanted to share!

Our 14-year-old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

    Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

    Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven.

That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought he had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, "To Meredith," in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, "When a Pet Dies." Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

    Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

    Love,

    God

  126. I'm so sorry to hear what happened! Dogs can definitely hold a special place in your heart! We have our dog, Lucy, and she definitely is apart of our family. I can't imagine how difficult it would be. You will have to remember the happy memories that you had with her.

  127. Oh Sasha, that's just awful. Bless your hearts, and for thinking of hugging Adrain before he went in so Lucy would smell all of you. Isn't that one of God's miracles that dogs can receive our presence that way? I truly believe Randy Alcorn from his book "Heaven" where he says he believes that our father in heaven will delight in giving us all the pets we loved as a gift in Heaven when we get there. So blessed in Christ are we, that our relationships (and aren't the relationships we have with our animals just precious?) can be permanent. But I'm SO sorry your hearts are sore right now.

  144. Sasha,

I was so sad to read your post today. Your doggie was the most beautiful lab. We too lost our 11 1/2 yr old lab unexpectedly 2 days after Christmas. Our life has not been the same without her. We miss her terribly. We have rescued another dog as we just wanted another doggie like her (this one is a chewer so that's been kinda tough, always have to watch her) but she's a sweet female doggie that our kids love (we have two other small doggies as well) and a smaller version of our lab (no more big dogs for us. But we loved our sweet lab and she was our first 'baby'). I am sending your family lots of love and prayers today, as your mourn your sweet Lucy. I am so sad for you all. I hope at some point you will want to consider another dog as I fully believe they can bring great joy and are also good for kids with some special needs (I have a special needs child too). Hugs to you all. Molly

  145. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Lucy was a beautiful dog. Our pets show us such unconditional love and God blessed you richly with Lucy. May you find comfort in your wonderful memories of her. I am praying God will comfort you during this difficult time. I believe she is romping in heaven right now and that she will be waiting to greet you on the day you come home to heaven.

  146. Oh, I am SO sorry for your loss... it's so weird how they become part of our family, so fast. Even for those of us who do the training, and the cleaning, huh?! I hope and pray your hearts are comforted in this time. And I hope and pray that your remember that God has a plan for you in this loss.

We lost ours almost 2 years back... we miss her SO much. But, as encouragement for you in this time right now, I can tell you the Lord really did allow it at that time for a reason. From the bear that came into our campsite the week following her passing that I KNOW she would have attempted to defend us from and gotten mauled while we were in the middle of nowhere, instead of the bear just sniffing around and wandering away... to the fact that we had a move across the state into a rental the following year that she wouldn't have dealt well with and it would have been much much much harder with her... just little things like that that I can see the Lord's timing in now. At the time though, it just hurt.

I hope you're comforted in this time, and I hope that God gives you what you need to minister to your loved ones right now, and to you. Hugs!!

  163. Can't see through my tears. WOW, to relive our loss 12 years ago this Christmas by reading of yours, brought it all rushing back. We lost our beloved 4 year old black lab as well, his name was Nitro. We had gone to my in-laws for Christmas came home and he wasn't in the yard. A neighbor of ours saw an accident of a lab getting hit on the busy road a coupld of street over behind our house and she knew it was him. A police officer tried to get him out of the road and he took of running and was never found. Your heart can't fix the loss and pain you feel after a loss like that and trying to comfort your 4 year old son who they grew up together doesn't understand that he's never coming home. Oh so sad and my heart goes out to your family... Amber

  164. Oh my gosh. I am so very sorry for your loss. We live on a hwy and have lost more than our fair share of pets. It's heartbreaking to say the least. I am the worst when it comes to saying goodbye. When I first found your blog I felt an instant connection, one because your home is exactly the way I want mine decorated, two, because I too, have a child with special needs, but felt it was providential that I found you because we too have a black lab named Lucie. It's my dd's dog and she's a hoot. I am so so very sorry. My heart and prayers go out to your family at this time of sadness. <3
